Bait ball snorkeling Day Trip

Snorkeling with Atlantic Megafauna

The last years have shown a change in the ocean. The warmer temperatures and the presence of biomass in the shallow waters around the island attack more and more megafauna to feed in our waters. Science found out that megafauna teams up with pelagic fish to feed. We have huge bait balls of snipe fish. Tuna, Bonito and Amberjacks come to feed on this huge amount of biomass and form this duo call bait balls. Other species benefit like the shearwater birds that dive up to 20m deep to feed on the small fish. But from below the big animals come in such as Sei whales and the Giant whale sharks. Dolphins participate as well. It is not allowed to snorkel with the whales in the Azores but we are allowed to snorkel with the pelagic fish, whale sharks and the magnificent whale sharks. With our megalodon project the scientists tagged whale sharks and we could follow their migration. They move all the way from the Azores to the waters of Venezuela and Surinam. During the warm water month they return to the Azores to team top with Tuna and the big feast begins. Seasons for feeding balls are different so here is an overview what you can expect : May-July Dolphins, Tuna, Aberjacks in bait balls August - October Whale sharks, Dolphins, Tuna, Aberjacks in bait balls

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainable treatment of the animals is our top priority. Therefore, the experienced skippers also read the behavior of the animals first and decide when or if you are allowed into the water.

With the help of the experienced skippers you can observe the behavior of the whales in peace and learn a lot about their life and migration cycles.

Why Pico Sport

Operating since 1993 we have 30 years of experience with marine mammals. Our skippers work with us since many years and lots of experience in gentle handling of the animals. We find the whales and dolphins because we work with land based spotters. This technique dates back to the days of the old whalers. With strong binoculars the so called VIGIA searches for the whales and dolphins. They tell the boats the positions of the animals. Thus, we never go blindly to the ocean and work with a 99% success rate in sightings.
