Code of Conduct for Whale Watching

Pico Sport has been running sustainable whale watching tours, both at Pico and in Patagonia, for more than 20 years. Regulations for whale and dolphin watching were introduced to the Azores a number of years ago. Those laws dictate specific rules for boats which do whale watching. We strictly abide by these rules. All our boats are operated by Portuguese skippers as it is important to us to integrate the local community. Our experienced guides on board give expert insights into the life of marine animals around Pico. We aim to collect garbage that we come across during our tours and bring it back with us for recycling on land. Because even a small piece of garbage can be hazardous to marine life. The archipelago of the Azores are green islands and we want to keep them as they are: The island world in the Atlantic Ocean as one of the few oases left on our planet which we should preserve.

Gesellschaft zur Rettung der Delfine (association for the rescue of dolphins)

Pico Sport / Scuba Azores cooperates with Gesellschaft zur Rettung der Delfine and with Dolphin Watch Alliance. Our tour „Delfinkontakt spezial“ is conducted under the direction of leading biologist Angela Ziltener. She is president of the Dolphin Watch Alliance. The organisation has its origins in the project “Dolphin Watch – Natural Underwater Science” which actively campaigns for the research and the protection of dolphins in the tourism hot spot Hurghada/Egypt.

Planting trees with “plant for the planet”

For each litre of consumed fuel at the Azores Pico Sport/Scuba Azores plants trees at the equator in Kenya. Our daughter Maisha Wirth is “ambassador for climate justice” and representative of “plant for the planet” in Kenya. Together with the initiator of the organisation Felix Finkbeiner, Pico Sport/Scuba Azores conducted the first tree academy in Kenya in July 2011. Among the audience were high-ranking UN environmental representatives and the Kenyan Minister of Forestry and Wildlife. The picture below shows Maisha with the musician Ayub Ogada who composed the music for the tree academy in Kenya. Ayub took part in Peter Gabriel’s world ensemble and wrote the theme music for the movie “The Constant Gardener”. Here you can have a look at pictures of our planting activities in January 2013 during the Rhino Camp 2013.

Time for sharks.

Time for sharks. September has been a great month for us to see Blue Sharks. The spot near to Madalena was good every single time. The waiting time while chumming was longer than in the years before and it became a bug previlege to see the Blue sharks, as they are highly overfished. ButFrank Wirth´s crew of Pico Sport , Andy Stelter, João Rodrigues, Rui Romano, Emanuel Goulart, Fernando Maiato and all the rest made it possible. See a clip of Erich Pröll who is filming for ORF TV at the moment with us.
Even in October we are with the sharks and only yesterday Andy managed to get 3 big Blues around our boat.

45 minutes with Mako and Blue sharks.

Yesterday was a great day for shark diving at Pio. Andy Stelter got a massive Mako shark for more than 40 minutes and a big Blue came in as well. What a great experience and what a pevilege to meet some of the last remaining of their species ……

The shark weeks 2016 are open for booking now….dont wait, join Frank Wirth´s Pico Sport and the sharks in 2016.

Swimming with dolphins is a great experience.

Swimming with dolphins is a great experience.

While in many places like in egypt the dolphins are under heavy pressure, here, in the open sea of Pico Island the snorkeling with dolphins is sustainable.

Here we do not disturb the animals and they are free to swim whereever they want. Also we have strong regulations about how to operate with whales and dolphins.

Sometimes its just a short visit but often they allow us to dive into the deep blue with them. See this little clip to see how free and happy our dolphins are in the deep blue Ocean of Pico Island. Our new Dolphin packages 2016 are online. We cooperate with Dolpin Aliance and the Gesellschaft zur Rettung der Delfine. Therefore we have a special dolphin trip in June 2016 thats guided by the biologistst Angela Ziltener and Sina Kreiker.

Check our web page and reserve your dolphin dream holiday 2016 with us!
