The people – the pros – the team
Scuba Diving Azores Team – Frank is the founder of several companies and initiatives worldwide, all with a focus on wildlife observation. The emphasis is placed on sustainable ecotourism, contribution to research and conservation programmes and the cooperation with young people and students.
Frank has been working in the tourism industry for more than 25 years. He came to the Azores for the first time in 1993 and in 1996 he founded Pico Sport Lda.
“To me it is important to contribute to the sustainable development of tourism and to create a platform for research and nature and wildlife conservation. We must engage and educate our children because only they have the chance to transform the future of our planet.”
Eduardo has been working for Pico Sport since 2004. For many years Eduardo worked as a captain on fishing vessels in international and local waters. He has participated in a project of the University of Horta in the development of sea turtle friendly fishing hooks. Today he works as a relief skipper on the whale watching boats. As a real “Picorotto” his knowledge of the country and people is essential in his daily interaction with our customers. Eduardo is also a very important link to the local population and he tries to bring across the concept of sustainability and nature conservation to the islanders.
Dr. Erich K. Ritter
Erich is the only professional biologist specialized in the behavior and interaction between sharks and humans. Thanks to his initiative we are able to dive safely with the sharks at Pico. Erich is the head of the international SharkSchool™, consequently he returns to Pico each year. There he participates in the development of shark-diving techniques as well as in the protection of blue sharks and mako sharks in the Mid-Atlantic Ocean.
Kendi Kinge Wirth
Kendi operates behind the scenes and manages the affairs of Pico Sport/Scuba Azores and Rhino Watch in Kenya. At Pico she is responsible for the accommodation of the guests and for the housekeeping. With her ever positive mood she is always ready to answer the questions of our guests and to solve any problems that may arise.
Maisha is Junior Guest Manager ☺ Furthermore, she is “ambassador for climate justice” in Kenya and since July 2011 she is the official “ambassador for trees” of the organization Plant for the Planet. Since 2012 Maisha was able to plant 10,000 trees and consequently compensates the CO2-emission of our motor boats at Pico. Those who are interested can plant a tree in Kenya together with Maisha. You may receive more information here.
Antonia has been working for Pico Sport/Scuba Azores since 2002. As a student she already was supervisor of the first “Dolphin School” in the world. Since then Antonia has regularly come back to work as a volunteer and has especially enjoyed caring for families. In 2010 she worked in a pilot project of Pico Sport/Scuba Azores on the Island of Contadora in Panama where she saved the lives of countless sea turtles. By now she successfully finished her studies in veterinary medicine where she specialised in reptiles. Today she supports Pico Sport/Scuba Azores only from time to time.
Emanual has been working as a skipper for Pico Sport/Scuba Azores since 2005. He is considered the best captain of the Azores when it comes to professional work with sperm whales and is therefore regularly booked by big film teams. He was involved in Jean-Michel Cousteau’s “Dolphins and Whales” 3D production. He is one of our certified shark skippers trained by Dr. Erich Ritter and travels regularly to the offshore banks to work with sharks, Mobulas, whales and dolphins.
Anteiro is one of the most important components in Pico’s whale watching business. He is a vigia, a land-based whale spotter, equipped with the skills to spot whales and dolphins from a far distance only using a set of binoculars. Early in the morning he takes position in his look-out tower, informs us about the different species he is seeing and directs our skippers, just like a flight controller, by radio to the right location. He is the most knowledgeable of all observers, a specialist with more than 20 years of experience. He really does not miss a single blow!
Friederike started off as a participant of our “Dolphin School” at Pico. She has remained true to Pico Sport/Scuba Azores to this day and joined Frank in travels to foreign countries. The Orca Camp in Patagonia is still on her wish list. Rieke is highly motivated and technically proficient and can be deployed anywhere at any time.
Rui has started working as a skipper in 2011. He mainly runs our whale watching tours from Lajes. He is a typical resident of Pico with an excellent English. He is popular with our guests due to his friendly manner, his good eyes for animals and his relaxed driving style. Rui’s passion for boats and the ocean lies in the family as his father and grandfather were ship builders.
Fatima has been working for Pico Sport/Scuba Azores since 2005. She is responsible for all administrative work necessary to keep Pico Sport running. From obtaining licenses and paying bills to important contacts with local organisations – Fatima has everything under control. She has been raised at Pico and is loved by the other team members for her disarming smile and warm, welcoming personality.
Pico Sport has a team of highly qualified professionals, enthusiastic volunteers and friendly people who are all dedicated to make you feel safe and comfortable and to make sure that your holidays on Pico Island become memorable. I thank my team for their excellent work, tireless dedication and their love for nature and animals.
I am looking forward for each new season at the Azores and we guarantee that we will do our very best to present you the nature of the Azores both under and above the water in a professional manner.
